Susan Nyamora has joined South Florida Wellness Network, as Executive Director. Ms. Nyamora is a devoted advocate for Mental Health and Substance Abuse program funding at both the state and local level. She is a compassionate business leader at heart with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Social Work. She is a Florida Certified Recovery Peer Specialist, and expects to complete her Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) certification in late 2015.
Ms. Nyamora has made a personal commitment to empower and educate others by sharing her experience, strength and hope. She is a devoted advocate for family and believes that family support is beneficial to healthy living. Realizing the desperate need for services that assist individuals and families that are living with mental illness and substance abuse, she frequently advocates for funding and to raise awareness to reduce the stigma that is associated with mental illness and substance abuse. She has been to Tallahassee several times to speak to the legislature about the importance of funding and the impact community based programs have in the lives of many.
Ms. Nyamora is not just an advocate; she is a hands-on leader who strongly believes in just and equal treatment for all. She has also worked with schools and community based organizations to raise awareness on substance abuse and mental illness. She has been a part of the United Way Speakers Bureau, a member of Hospitals & Institutions, a member of the National Association for Social Workers (NASW), and a facilitator for Alcohol Chemical Treatment Services.
As a result of her passion and dedication to help others Ms. Nyamora is well recognized in the recovery community. She has assisted many individuals through the reunification process of the child welfare system, and has provided support to those facing the criminal justice system and the restoration of their rights. She has helped hundreds of families’ transition from treatment to maintenance through prevention plans. In addition, she consistently advocates for individuals to receive services that promote self-reliance, independence and minimize homelessness and incarceration.
Ms. Nyamora has received multiple recognitions for her dedication and hard work in the Broward County community. She has a proven record in establishing quality, efficient treatment services in behavioral health, advocacy, peer-to-peer services, nonprofit leadership and other related services. Ms. Nyamora is currently involved in several community workshops to address community needs.
Over the last 5 years Ms. Nyamora was part of the executive team at Susan B. Anthony, a residential treatment center in Pembroke Pines, where she worked her way up from being a volunteer, to a Certified Recovery Peer Specialist, Case Manager, Residential Supervisor, Programs Supervisor and most recently as the Director of Community Services.
